Tree locations include: California, Florida, Michigan and Mississippi River Valley.

Location/Forest Name – Camp and Carr Fire Restoration
Tree Species – Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, Sugar Pine and Incense Cedar
    Project Type – Wildfire Recovery
Total Trees to Plant – 250,000
Impact: The 2018 wildfire season was unprecedented. Most notably in California, what was extradentary was the extreme loss of property and life due to the movement of fires from forest to private land areas, particularly during the Camp and Carr fires. Focusing on an eight-county region most impacted by the devastating Camp and Carr Fire of 2018, this reforestation project aims to restore large swaths of private lands – 8,000 acers in total – as this space is often omitted from governmental revitalization efforts.

Location/Forest Name – Lake Talquin Watershed Restoration
    Tree Species – Longleaf Pine
    Project Type – Watershed Restoration
Total Trees to Plant – 216,000
Impact: A longleaf pine restoration project is ongoing and aims to plant a total of 216,000 trees in the 2020 calendar year. The goal of the project is to restore the natural plant communities of this fire-dependent habitat in order to sustain the sandhill community. These improvements will benefit the watershed that is surrounded by forests and animal species such as gopher tortoise and eastern diamondback rattlesnake.

Location/Forest Name – Michigan State Forest Lands
    Tree Species – Jack Pine
Project Type – Wildlife Habitat Recovery
Total Trees to Plant – 284,000
Impact: The Arbor Day Foundation and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources have a goal of planting more than one million Jack pine trees to improve habitat for the endangered Kirtland’s warbler. This neotropical migratory songbird’s breeding habitat is almost exclusively confined to young, dense Jack pine stands in the area. Today, Kirtland’s warblers are found in only ten counties on Michigan’s northern lower peninsula and four counties in the upper peninsula. Efforts by our replanting partners have increased the number of warbler pairs from less than 200 to more than 2,300 pairs, bringing the species back from the brink of extinction.

Mississippi River Valley:

Location/Forest Name – 8-state region of amalgamated private forestlands and national forestlands
Tree Species – Mix of softwood and hardwoods – typically cottonwood, oaks and sycamores
    Project Type – Watershed Restoration
Total Trees to Plant – 250,000
Impact: The Mississippi River is a critical body of water in North America for commerce, climate and energy. It is the largest river in the United States and the third-largest in the world. Our goal of restoring one million acres of forestland in the region will directly improve water quality, as trees have the ability to filter out pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus. The forestland we’re restoring will filter the water and help to decrease pollution levels in the river as well as in the Gulf of Mexico. Originally the area was covered with 25 million acres of forestland, but currently less than 5 million acres remain forested, which has dramatically affected the ecosystem. The loss of this precious resource has resulted in decline of the wildlife as well as in the water quality that has since lead to an increasing dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. This conversion of forestland has also resulted in the loss of its natural flood control buffer.
